Aiden was getting the bar ready for opening later that day when Thailor and Cumar walked in. He rolled his eyes at them. “You don’t even knock anymore?”

“It’s a public place,” Thailor answered.

“No, it’s not, and even if it was, we’re closed. Didn’t you notice that?”

Thailor hopped onto a stool and waved his hand. “I’m not blind, of course I noticed it. But after what happened last night, I need a drink.”

Aiden arched a brow. He got a beer out of the fridge and handed it to Thailor after opening the bottle, then he looked at Cumar in question.

“Soda, please,” Cumar said.

Thailor had already drunk down half his bottle when Aiden gave Cumar what he’d asked for, and that was enough for Aiden to know something was wrong. “Is Chase okay?”

“Yeah. Lewis is staying with him.”

Aiden looked at Thailor—why wasn’t he saying what was wrong yet?

Thailor sighed. “They’re both okay, although Lewis is a bit shaken.”

“Okay, stop dicking around and tell me what the fuck happened.”

“There was a head on Lewis’ coffee table last night.”

Aiden blinked, wondering if he’d heard that right. “A head?”

“Yep. His stalker upgraded.”

“What does that even mean?”

“Some demons use body parts as courting gifts.”

“So a demon is courting Lewis.”

“Yeah, and the next step is taking him, so he’s staying with Chase for now. Not that it’ll change much, since I don’t think that’ll be enough to make the demon stop, but it’s the only thing we can do right now.”

Crap. Aiden had known about the flowers, of course, but he hadn’t realized the situation was so serious. He was glad Lewis had Thailor and Cumar on his side, but he felt guilty. He should be on Lewis’ side, too. He should be there, right beside Cumar and Thailor, making sure nothing happened to Lewis and that he was safe every minute of the day.

Yet he wasn’t.

He hadn’t even talked to Lewis since that night he’d gotten drunk and he’d kissed him and the disastrous Thanksgiving attempt at conversation that had followed. He’d promised himself he’d call after he’d talked to Chase the night before, but he hadn’t, not yet. He knew he’d been procrastinating, because he could have called that morning, yet he’d cleaned his apartment instead. He would have driven to Chase’s place if he’d known what had happened, but no one had thought to call him. He’d been left out of the loop because no one involved thought he needed to know Lewis was in danger.

He wasn’t going to let that happen again.

“You have any idea who that demon is?” he asked Thailor.

“No. I know of several species who do that thing with heads, but there’s no way to know what species this guy is from, although Lewis did give us a description. We’re not a hundred percent sure the demon who tried to pick him up last night is the one who’s been leaving him gifts, but I think it would be too big of a coincidence if he weren’t. But even knowing the species, we have no way to find this guy.
